The table below provides approximate salary ranges for biotechnology scientists in the San Diego region, based on level of education and training.

Animal Care

 No degree or AS

 6 months +

 Ability to work with animals in a laboratory environment. Barrier facility exposure, cage washing, general husbandry and laboratory maintenance skills.
 $10.00 - $12.00
Laboratory Technician Not required
 0-2 years
 Able for perform basic tests and experiments in a lab. Understands the concept behind standard lab testing and equipment. Great work ethic.
 $10.00 - $15.00
Scientific Level I
 AA or BS
 0-1 year
 Able to perform basic tests and experiments in a lab. Some formal and informal exposure to equipment and instruments. Great work ethic. Concise verbal, written and data entry skills.
 $10.00 - $12.00
Scientific Level II
 BS
 1-2 years
 Fundamental laboratory and data implementation experience. Limited equipment and instrument skill. Familiar with many methods and techniques. Requires task management and lab manager supervision. Concise verbal, written and data entry skills.
 $12.00 - $15.00
Scientific Level III
 MS or BS
 2-3 years
 Laboratory, equipment and instrument experience. Skilled in sample preparation, methods development and protocols. Excellent multi-tasking skills and a clear ability to communicate laboratory data. $15.00 - $20.00
Scientific Level IV
 MS or BS
 3-4 years
 Exceptional laboratory, equipment, instrument and data interpretation experience. Able to work with advanced methods and techniques. Works with a range of responsibility calling for some supervision. Excellent multi-tasking skills and a clear ability to communicate laboratory data. $20.00 - $24.00
Scientific Level V
 MS or BS
 4-6 years Advanced laboratory, equipment, instrument, data interpretation and analysis experience. Able to work with advanced methods and techniques. Works with a range of responsibility and has supervisory experience. Able to run laboratory equipment and instruments without supervision. Excellent multi-tasking skills and a clear ability to communicate laboratory data. $24.00 - $30.00
Scientific Level VI MS, BS or PhD 6+ years Independent laboratory responsibility. Ability to work with a group of scientists in developing and applying new methods and protocols. Understands FDA and other regulatory approvals. Can lead and manage a laboratory environment. $31.00 +
